Iranian Propaganda Should Be Stopped

Iran’s HispanTV is being called out as a propaganda menace.

HispanTV was established in 2012, as a Spanish-language subsidiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting corporation (IRIB), which the US government sanctioned in 2013 and 2022 for its role in trampling dissent, spreading disinformation, and being an accessory to human rights violations, including broadcasting forced confessions of dissidents and foreign hostages.

Modeled after its English-language twin, PressTV, HispanTV targets Spanish speaking audiences across the globe, and is available on satellite, cable, livestreaming,

In short, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hamas’ main sponsor, is using HispanTV to promote its proxy, defend its actions, glorify violence, and incite hatred through antisemitic innuendos about Israeli/Zionist/Jewish control of the international media.

HispanTV should therefore face the same treatment as Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV, whose broadcasts were stopped by Europe’s leading satellite operator Eutelsat following an intervention by France’s broadcasting watchdog CSA. It was no coincidence that HispanTV’s sister channel PressTV was quick to denounce the decision.

HispanTV has faced sanctions in America and Europe, where it is no longer broadcast. But it still operates in Latin America.

Here at Latin Arabia. we have been noting this troubling situation for years.

Venezuela Chooses Unwisely

In practice, Venezuelan support for Palestine may not amount to much, but the government of Venezuela has been supporting the Palestinian cause for a long time, since the administration of Hugo Chavez.

This continues with President Maduro. However, inasmuch as Venezuela is a leftist dictatorship, the official show of support may not be anything but a facade. It may not reflect the will of the people.

What the policy does do is ingratiate Venezuela with Iran, which is problematic. It introduces Iranian influence into Latin America.

In an outpouring of international solidarity, thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas, joining the global call for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict raging in the Gaza Strip. These demonstrations are part of a significant global response to the escalating situation in the Middle East.

About 1.6 million Venezualans have Arab ancestry – around 6% of the total population – which does not mean that these Arabs necessarily support the Palestinian cause. Many are of Lebanese and Syrian descent (mostly Christian) which means they may be neutral when it comes to Hamas/Islamic sympathies.

(A taste of Arab food in Venezuela)

The country has had an Arab vice-president, Tareck El Aissami.

Again, an official support for Palestine may be nothing but political grandstanding, but I note it here since Venezuela is a Latin country.

Remember that Venezuela is an outlier, and it is presently pre-occupied with provoking a war with Guyana.

Iran’s influence is continuing to grow, not only in the support of Hezbollah operatives, but especially through the netcasting and broadcasting of HispanTV, which sends out Iranian propaganda to the continent. And Iran assists the dictatorial regime in Venezuela.

WASHINGTON —
Iran is striving to expand its influence in fellow U.S. adversary Venezuela, which is hosting an Iranian cultural fair this week and seeking Iranian assistance to revive the ailing Venezuelan energy industry.

Iran is troublemaking in the Western Hemisphere, particularly in this area of propaganda.

Whatever one thinks of pro-Jewish or pro-Israel lobbies in the United States, they are an antidote to some really ugly antisemitic disinformation out there. Indeed, Latin America is often drenched with anti-Israel agitprop that would not have been tolerated in the USA, until recently, which is a sad commentary on recent developments.

The anti-Israel indoctrination that America is sadly seeing now, Latin America has been drenched with for a long time.

Yet, oddly, Iran’s influence is more political than religious.

Why not religious?

Because Islam is being countered in Latin America – not by Jewish influence, as the Jewish population is usually small – but rather by a large and growing Evangelical Christian movement.

In Brazil, the population is 31% Evangelical.
In El Salvador, the population is 40% Evangelical — more than Catholics.
In Guatemala, the population is 40% Evangelical.
In Honduras, the population is 40% Evangelical.
In Chile, the population is 18% Evangelical.
In Argentina, the population is 15% Evangelical.

These Evangelicals tend to be very pro-Zionist.

So Iran’s influence is limited to the political arena, which is scary enough, though even in politics, the Evangelical church is competing successfully.

In the case of Chile and Brazil, the growing Evangelical power base has not stopped the governments from criticizing Israel, but it will prevent some of the Latin governments from going too far.

In one nation, Guatemala, the Evangelicals have made the country very friendly to Israel.

El Salvador is particularly interesting, as it has an influential Palestinian (chiefly Christian) minority population. The Palestinian Christians tend to be more Catholic or Eastern Orthodox, though.

Their present president, Nayib Bukele, is of Palestinian origin, yet somewhat pro-Israel.

So the Evangelicals are winning.

Venezuelan Crisis – Arab?! Israel?!

Venezuelan Crisis – Arab?! Israel?!

posted on YouTube, February 8, 2019

Without getting too involved in the crisis in Venezuala (as of February 14, 2019), there is an Arab factor to this.

The former-president Hugo Chavez and the present dictator Maduaro were/are both pro-Palestinian. Maduro has allowed the Lebanese group, Hezbollah, into Venezuela.

While it is true that Venezuela had approximately 1,600,000 citizens of Arab descent, about 5% of the population (in 2017), almost all were Christian. They would have had nothing to do with allowing an Islamic insurgency group into Venezuela.

That idiocy was the working of Hugo Chavez who worked out a deal with Iran, Iran’s proxy: Hezbollah, and cooperated with Iran’s propaganda outlet HispanTV.

Margarita Island off the Caribbean coast of Venezuela serves as a hub for drug trafficking and Hezbollah as well as other Islamist extremists such as Hamas. Margarita Island is being used by Iranian and Iranian-linked militants as a base of operations. Steinitz further added that “attention has focused on the group’s presence among Lebanese Shia in the 12,000-strong Arab community on Margarita Island.”

Venezuela became interested in asymmetric warfare in 2006 under Chávez. Terrorism is a part of asymmetric warfare, and Venezuela’s participation “has allowed Hezbollah to plan, fundraise, train, coordinate and carry out operations, mostly fundraising and intelligence collection.”

Chavez and Maduro had allowed Hezbollah far too much free reign. Hezbollah has a massive influence in Venezuela, and the opposition to Maduro wants the Lebanese group, Hezbollah, out.

The opposition to Maduro is taking a pro-Israel stance.

(Guadio believes that Israel can help eliminate Hezbollah from Venezuela)

You read that rightly. The present contender, Juan Guaidó, wants Israel to help Venezuela get Hezbollah out.

Let us hope that Hezbollah is soon evicted from Venezuela.

However, we should be aware that Islamic influences have gone too far in Latin America, already. There was never a danger of a South American country becoming an Islamic Republic; but there is a large amount of anti-Israel attitudes among some Latins, much of which was purchased by Iran and (originally) Saudi Arabia – though Saudi Arabia is starting to have a rapprochement with Israel.

Again, this is not to say that Venezuela will be turning Islamic any time soon. Not by a long shot! The vast majority of Venezuelans of Arab descent are Christian – some even Evangelical Christian.

While there are Muslims in Venezuela, their numbers are grossly exaggerated; and Muslims are less than 1% of the population. Many of those might leave if Maduro is booted out of office.

But, as noted, Iranian money has been spent to foster an anti-Israel stance in much of Latin America. In Venezuela, this may be about to end.

Around the same time, Brazil has elected a pro-Israel president whose wife is Evangelical. The Evangelicals (pro-Israel) are turning the tide in South America.
