Parroting classic antisemitic tropes, the Colombian president has accused Israel of controlling “international financial capital” and of silencing the global press

In a region characterized by turbulent politics, Colombia has long stood out as a Latin American country with a pragmatic approach to international relations. But the tenure of President Gustavo Petro, a former member of the M-19 guerilla movement elected in 2022, has brought heightened scrutiny to Colombia’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel.

The problem is less born of religious hatred, but rather that left wing governments seem to have made a whipping boy of Israel.

There are around 120,000 Palestinians in Colombia, a nation of 52 million people. So they do not constitute much of a demographic footprint. Though there are roughly 3 million Colombians with some degree of Arab ancestry. However, the majority of those would be Christian and might not be quite as sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

The Evangelical presence is only around 14%, which is significant, but not that influential.

Chile on the other had is about 2-1/2% Palestinian, but they are very elite, and they pack a real political wallop.

On the videos, below, one can see Chilean President Boric attending a Palestinian Christmas event.

But remember, Chile is a special case. The Palestinians in Chile are so elite that the politicians – both left and right – have to pay a sort of homage to the community – similar to how American politicians cozy up to AIPAC.

“The Palestinian community is to Chile what the Jewish community is to the US,” [The president of Chile’s Jewish community, Gabriel] Zaliasnik explained.

So while Palestinians are force to be reckoned with in Chile, most of Latin America’s antisemitism seems to stem from leftist governments, more than raw antisemitism.

Diplomatic Row Over Lula’s Comments

Diplomatic Row Over Lula’s Comments

The President of Brazil, President Lula, has made some comments comparing the plight of Palestinians in Gaza to the Holocaust.

Well, the Israeli spin machine was furious.

Israel’s Netanyahu slams Brazilian president’s comparison of Gaza war to the Holocaust
February 18, 2024

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL (AP) — Israel on Sunday condemned Brazil’s president for comparing the war in Gaza to the Holocaust, accusing him of being antisemitic and trivializing the Nazi genocide of European Jews during World War II.

The outcry further strained relations between the countries, which have deteriorated since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva returned to office last year. Lula has portrayed himself as a leader of the “ Global South,” a loosely defined group of developing countries.

Of course, Israel goes into attack mode with any comparison of its operations in Gaza to what the Nazis did to the Jews in Europe in World War II.

But Colombia and Brazil are standing by Brazil.

Colombia, Bolivia back Brazil’s Lula in Israel row over Gaza war comments
21 Feb 2024

Colombia and Bolivia are backing Brazil as its diplomatic row with Israel escalated after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, comparing its actions with the Holocaust.

Well, Brazil was wrong, to be sure. But was it wise for Israel to make this a bigger issue than it should be?

The Many Arabs of Barranquilla, Colombia

The Many Arabs of Barranquilla, Colombia

There was a massive immigration to Barranquilla – a coastal city on Colombia’s north coast – during the early 20th century, and not just Arabs but also Jews. Here are some videos about Barranquilla.

There are roughly 3.2 million Arabs in Colombia. Most are Christians. This probably explains why Colombia recalled its ambassador to Israel during this 2023 Gaza War.

There are very few Muslims.

Though this next snippet talks about Palestinians in Colombia in general, the effect of Palesitnian immigration would apply to Barranquilla as well.

Today, according to approximate calculations from the Palestinian embassy – since there is no official census – in Colombia there are between 100,000 and 120,000 Palestinians, of the first, second, third and fourth generation, [although] some of [them] don’t feel like it.

Of these, about 90% are located on the Atlantic Coast, especially in Barranquilla, and the remaining 10% would be distributed in the rest of the country. “Many preferred to stay on the coast because geographically it reminds them more of the Middle East than Bogotá, without a doubt : the climate, being coastal, or common customs such as sitting in the patio of the house, between four and six in the morning. late, to wait for the heat to go down, to chat with the neighbors,” says Montero.

Of course, there are also Syrians, Lebanese, etc. in Barranquilla, and Colombia as well.

BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE

The history of Colombia gets more complex, though.

During the Spanish Inquisition, Jews were tossed out of Spain. Many fled to the New World, where whites were in demand by the colonial authorities, and initially few questions were asked.

The upshot is that a lot of Crypto-Jews went to Latin America, and about 23% of Latinos carry Jewish DNA markers. Colombia is famous for having Crypto-Jews. Some have converted back to Judaism.

A lot of info to digest.

The most important thing overlooked is that 31% of Brazil is now Evangelical, and they tend to strongly support Israel. Brazil’s Lulu can only go so far in his criticism of Israel.

Another issue is Latin culture, itself.

Latin/Spanish and Portuguese cultures center on the national liberation struggles against the Islamic/Moorish invaders of Spain and Portugal in the Middle Ages … the so-called Reconquista. Latin culture, at its core, is not friendly to Islam.

What is driving this pro-Palestinianism is the large influence of:

A) Palestinian ethnic groups in Latin America, especially Chile, Honduras, and El Salvador.

B) Iran’s propagandizing through HispanTV.

C) Leftist regimes.

And finally, one should take this news report with a grain of salt, as it is posted by AJPlus, a subset of Al Jazeera, which is a Qatari based anti-Israel media outlet.

Remember, not only Brazil, but also Guatemala has a very large pro-Israel Evangelical constituency. Guatemala is 40 percent Evangelical.
