Argentina

Argentina is a very large country on the southeast of South America, running from the polar south to the tropical north. The population is very European in ancestry, with roughly half being pure-European in background, and another large section being mostly European in background.

It has a large Arab population (9±%), but which is intermarried and assimilated into the country’s larger demographic This is because it is heavily Maronite (Catholic) Lebanese who assimilate well.

Interestingly, Argentina has around 180,000 Jews – the seventh largest Jewish population in the world – and they can be politically active.

Palacio_Árabe

The is the Palacio Árabe, a major cultural attraction in Mar del Plata, Argentina’s seventh largest city, and a major beach resort.

It was designed in the style of Neo-Mudéjar architecture.

Mudéjar architecture was a blend of Christian and Islamic styles which originated in Spain. In the 19th century the style was revived in Spain as Neo-Mudéjar architecture. It then carried over to Latin-America.

It was built in 1948, thus showing that even at that early date, Arab culture was strong in Argentina.

The Arab society put up a plaque at the entrance which memorializes Mahmoud Khalil-Julian Hassein, the project developer, who died in 1967.

Itongadol. – The Google search for “1948 refugees” produces about 6 million results. Almost all (at least until page six) speak of Palestinian refugees, as if they were the only 1948 refugees. However, it is estimated that since the beginning of the 1948 war between Arabs and Israelis to the 1970s, about 1,000,000 Jews fled or were expelled from their ancestral homes in Muslim countries. 260,000 of these refugees came to Israel between 1948 and 1951 and comprised 56% of all immigration to the fledgling state.

While the facts are true, the presentation is a bit off. 1948 primarily saw Arabs being refugees. Most Jewish refugees came later.

Still, one can read the article. It is interesting. If you cannot read Spanish, a translation engine might help.

Argentina has a large and influential Jewish population.
