Argentina Will Host Jewish Version of Olympics

Argentina Will Host Jewish Version of Olympics

While a lot of Latin America is condemning Israel for the war in Gaza, Argentina has just elected a president who converted to Judaism, and is a fan of Israel.

Talk about contrasts.

So, the Jews of Latin America are holding their Maccabi games in Argentina.

What are the Maccabi games?

They are a sort of Olympic games for Jews.

(JTA) — With the Pan American Maccabi Games set to begin in Argentina next week, an Israeli delegation of more than 200 athletes was planning to join 5,000 Jewish participants from across the world who will compete in 30 sports.

But, as with practically every facet of Israeli society, Oct. 7 changed their plans.

Now a pared down group of 74 Israeli athletes will head to Argentina for the 15th edition of the international tournament. Forty-five of them live in communities close to the Gaza Strip, the area attacked on Oct. 7, according to a press release from the Maccabi World Union, the global governing body that puts on the quadrennial Maccabiah Games in Israel and other international tournaments.

What this means is that Latin America is split in its sympathies. Indeed, even countries are split in their sympathies.

This is from Al Jazeera Spanish.

It is about the Palestinian Soccer Club in Santiago, Chile (CD Palestino).

CD Palestino = Club Deportivo Palestino = Palestinian Sports Club

The soccer club is world famous.

The comments (underneath the Video, on the YouTube page) show that a lot of people who are not Arab, nor Palestinian, nor from Chile, root for the team.

The team has taken on a political life of its own.

This particular video has been politicized, as it references the present Gaza War in one of its images.

(You have to watch it on YouTube)

Another fascinating video from Chile about the soccer (futbol) team, CD Palestino. It has been an international sensation.

The fans of CD Palestino (Palestinian Sports Club) affectionately call themselves Baisanos because their ancestors, who came to Chile 100 years ago called themselves countrymen, which is Spanish is paisano, only, being Arab in origin, they mispronounced the p as B, hence Baisanos.

At one time, the team members were required to be of Palestinian origins, but that is no longer required.

The fan base include a lot of non-Arab aficionados.

The video (which you have to click to watch on YouTube itself) shows that the team in Chile has become a sort of unofficial national team for the Palestinians in the Mideast. But there are issues. The Chilean team sponsors gender equality which does not go over so well in the repressed Islamic region.

The documentary is subtitled in English.

This is not exaggerationg, but the Palestino [Palestinian] Soccer Club of Santiago, Chile has become world renowned. It gets involved in Mideast Politics.

NOTE: The team is regularly referred to as CD Palestino which means Club Deportivo Palestino, which means Palestinian Sports CLub.

Locally, in Chile, CD Palestino will have moments of silence before any game for any occasion when Palestinians are killed in the Mideast conflict between Israel and Palestine.

CD Palestino’s fame has spread to the Mideast, where its players are more well known that they are in Chile.

This team is well known internationally, however, there is another force in Chile … Evangelical Christians, and they are … pro-Israel. On a per capita basis they may not be as rich as Palestinian-Chileans, but there are a whole lot more Evangelicals than Palestinians.
