Palestinian-Chileans Fight to Preserve Their Culture

Palestinian-Chileans Fight to Preserve Their Culture

Chile has the largest Palestinian community outside of the Mideast. And now, France 24 Español has done a video report on the community.

You can get English subtitles by following the instructions below:

This is in Spanish, but it there is an option to have it translated to English.

But the Palestinians in Chile are a prosperous and major political force in South America. They can be called Chilestinos, and they are over 90% Christian.

Many of their ancestors fled the Holy Land around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The Ottoman Empire ruled the Holy Land at that time, and the Christians were fleeing the abuse they suffered at the hands of the Muslim Turks.

Many of them went to Chile.

Given that the Palestinian cause today is often conflated with Islam (such as with Hamas or Islamic Jihad) — and given that their ancestors were persecuted by Muslims — it is odd that the Chilestinos are so caught up in the Palestinian cause.

But they are.

There identification with the land overrides any religious animosities that might have existed.

Chile’s President Wants to Open an Embassy in Palestine

Chile’s President Wants to Open an Embassy in Palestine

This will cause some issues:

Soruce: Times of Israel – Dec 22, 2022

SANTIAGO, Chile — President Gabriel Boric of Chile, whose country has the largest Palestinian population outside of the Middle East, said Wednesday that he planned to open an embassy “in Palestine.”

The announcement by the leftist president, who began his four-year term in March 2022, came at a Christmas ceremony for Chile’s Palestinian community, estimated to be more than 300,000 strong.

“One of the decisions we have taken as a government, I think we have not yet made it public… is that we will raise the level of our official representation in Palestine,” Boric said. “We will open an embassy under our government.”

Chile has a large, prosperous, and powerful Palestinian community, so this wsa probably inevitable, but it will be controversial.

The documentary is subtitled in English.

This is not exaggerationg, but the Palestino [Palestinian] Soccer Club of Santiago, Chile has become world renowned. It gets involved in Mideast Politics.

NOTE: The team is regularly referred to as CD Palestino which means Club Deportivo Palestino, which means Palestinian Sports CLub.

Locally, in Chile, CD Palestino will have moments of silence before any game for any occasion when Palestinians are killed in the Mideast conflict between Israel and Palestine.

CD Palestino’s fame has spread to the Mideast, where its players are more well known that they are in Chile.

This team is well known internationally, however, there is another force in Chile … Evangelical Christians, and they are … pro-Israel. On a per capita basis they may not be as rich as Palestinian-Chileans, but there are a whole lot more Evangelicals than Palestinians.

Chile’s Senate Remembered Gazans?

Chile’s Senate Remembered Gazans?

Can you image that in the U.S. Senate?

NO WAY!

The Palestinians in Chile have clout.

Senator Alejando Navarro, a leftist senator, started by mentioning how bad conditions in Gaza were. Then he noted that there was talk of a conquest of Gaza. Then the Senator put forth a request to remember the victims of both sides.

The president of the Senate approved the motion to remember the dead civilians and children of the Israel-Gaza war, but he kept the tone diplomatically neutral by re-stating that the moment of silence would be for the victims of all sides.

However, the Palestine Federation of Chile labelled their video on YouTube as if the Chilean Senate was honoring the Gazan victims – without mentioning that the moment of silence also remembered Israeli victims.

Make no mistake, the Palestine Federation of Chile is powerful in Chile. Even non-Arab-Chileans will yield to its influence.

One prominent Jewish Chilean has spoken in the past about the Palestinian-Chilean community’s power …

The Palestinian community is to Chile what the Jewish community is to the U.S.

– Gabriel Zaliasnek, then president of Chile’s Jewish Federation

Remember that Chile is not a third-world dictatorship, but a borderline first-world country with a functioning democracy. It is a trend setter in Latin America.

Such pro-Palestinian sympathies in a Western democracy is troubling.

Both the Israelis and Jewish groups have started to notice this.

The World Jewish Congress posted this on YouTube last year:

Jewish groups are not happy with Chile.
