Palestinians Flexed Muscles in Chile

The Chilean Senate last week approved a resolution calling on President Sebastian Pinera Echenique to adopt a law boycotting settlement goods and banning commercial activity with companies that operate in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The motion passed on 30 June with 29 votes in favour and six abstentions, no votes were cast against the move.

This story is about two months late before I caught it on a written news story, here, but it was not headlines in America. — Though I did catch it earlier (Click Here) as a video report.

The World Jewish Congress considers the Chilean Senate’s move to be anti-semitic.

There is no way that this could have occurred in the United States. In Chile, even conservative presidents, like Pinera, have to yield to the Palestinian bloc.

The Arab Lodge Near Buenos Aires

From a newspaper article published on August 8, 2020.

This is a video from the Hogar Árabe (Arab Home/Lodge) in Berisso, Argentina. Berissa is a suburb of Buenos Aires.

The Argentine Arab Lodge of Berisso reported that to celebrate its 103 years of life, they will be making different publications on the entity’s social networks.

In this framework, throughout the month of August, videos, surveys, photos, anecdotes and many more etc. will parade.

The Hogar Árabe has been in Berisso for a very long time, over a century in fact.

A lot of those ladies in the video above seem to be only part-Arab. The Arabs in Argentina have assimilated well, particularly since 90% of them tend to be Christian.

Chile Lit A Skyscraper With Keffiyeh

From earlier in July:

And from the Middle East Monitor, which is NOT exactly unbiased.

Essentially, a major skyscraper, Chile’s Telephone Tower, was lit up with a Palestinian keffiyeh … to support the Palestinians against Israel’s annexation plans.

Chile has a large – and elite – Palestinian population. This could not happen in the United States.

This is the power of the Palestinian community in Chile.

As Israel moves closer to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank, solidarity in the Global South has been gaining momentum. On 2 July Chile’s Telephone Tower was lighted with the Palestinian kufiyeh in support of the Palestinian people and rejection of the annexation plan. Chile, the country with the largest population of Palestinians in Latin America, directed their gesture of support to the Palestinian people in the Occupied Territories.

Chile was not alone in its solidarity efforts; representatives from most Latin American countries signed a joint statement against Israel’s annexation plan. The document was released on 2 July by more than 320 public figures. Among them, former presidents, parliamentarians, ministers, academics and artists. They called upon the international community to impose effective counter measures against Israel, including targeted sanctions, ending trade ties and legal action.

From Chile: Palestinians In Chile Are Upset Over Proposed Annexation

Posted on YouTube: July 10, 2020

As noted elsewhere on this site, the Federación Palestina de Chile (Palestinian Federation of Chile) is very powerful — analagous to AIPAC in the United States. This is one of their newer videos, happily, it is translated into English, as my Spanish is abysmal.

Chile’s Palestinians are mostly Christian (Eastern Christian or Roman Catholic), but they are decidedly anti-Israel.

This should not be ignored. They are a wealthy elite in Chile, one of Latin America’s premier countries, which happens to be borderline first world. They have the clout to swing a lot of public opinion, if left unchecked.
