Israeli Influence In Latin America

Israeli Influence In Latin America

Again, note that the video (above) is by Al Jazeera which is funded by the Qatari government, and can be biased.

The video is in Spanish, but it there is an option to have it translated to English.

Unlike the USA, where there are very influential organized pro-Israel advocates, in much of Latin America the Jewish influence can be muted. Hence there is a mixed response of Latin American countries to the Mideast situation.

So Israel has to use different methods – other than it would in the USA or Canada – to get its message across.

Argentina is sort of an exception, as the Jews in Argentina were, by percentages, much larger than in other Latin countries. And Argentina’s president Javier Milei is very pro-Israel.

The real game changer is the rise of strong Evangelical Christianity in Latin America, especially in Brazil, where the Evangelical Christians are close to one-third of the population. When the President was Bolsonaro, the policies of the government were quite pro-Israel. Now that Lula is president, the police of Lula’s anti-Israel stances have to be muted from what they would otherwise be. The Evangelicals in Brazil are a powerful voting bloc.

Again, Brazil is an exception. Under President Bolsonaro, Brazil’s foreign policy was very, very pro-Israel, but the last Brazilian presidential election returned Lula to office. (However, that election was suspicious). Even so, Lula cannot be quite as anti-Israel as he would like, because of the Evangelical votes.

So the best thing for Israel to do would be to support Evangelical Christianity.

Argentine President Javier Milei rejected the arrest order the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is being accused of committing crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Milei posted a statement on X on Thursday backing Netanyahu on behalf of Argentina. He said that the country deeply disagrees with the arrest order that also involves former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

“This decision disregards Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself from the constant attacks of terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah,” Milei wrote.

Argentina’s President Milei has declared his affinity for Israel, and also for the Jewish religion. So this is no surprise.

But it goes deeper than that, Argentina – unlike other Latin nations – has had a large Jewish population for over a century, and they have greatly affected Argentina’s politics and culture. There have been Jews on the Argentine Pampas to Jews in Argentine music, etc.

Milei has broken ranks with much of Latin America’s drift to the left by being a free market advocate and a friend of Israel – he even considered converting to Judaism.

Last year, Milei even went so far as to fly up to New York to consult with Hasidic rabbis.

President Milei takes this seriously.

To see the effect of Jews on Argentina:

Argentina has the seventh largest community of Jews in the world, and the largest in Latin America.

There were some rough times during the general’s dictatorship from (1976-1983), but that was due more to politics than religion.

Historically, Argentina has been one of the more friendly countries in the world to Jews. Herzl actually considered a province in Argentina as an option for a Jewish state, if the Jews could not get back the Holy Land.

Due to the influence of Arabs in Latin America, particularly Palestinian-Latins, there has been a diplomatic move away from Israel by some Latin countries.

Argentina has been the notable exception.

This does not mean that things have been perfect for Jews in Argentina. After the October 7 attack, antisemitism has gone up, even in Argentina.

But President Milei remains friendly to Israel and to Judaism.

In October of 2024, a Jewish woman was sworn in as the President of Mexico. But do not think that the Jewish community in Mexico is thrilled about her.

After Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emerged victorious in Sunday’s election to become Mexico’s first female president-elect, many focused on a second milestone – the scientist-turned-politician will be Mexico’s first Jewish president.

But, according to members of Mexico City’s Jewish community who spoke to The Times of Israel after her win, the president-elect has distanced herself from them, and her triumph does not engender much excitement among her fellow Jews.

“I think that the main issue in the election, even for the Jewish community, was not her Jewishness, but her political views,” Daniel Fainstein, the dean of Jewish Studies at the Hebraica University in Mexico City, told The Times of Israel.

However, rather than being a strong supporter of Israel, President Sheinbaum pursues a more neutral policy. Her administration will probably not change Mexico’s policies towards the Mideast.

At this point, when the Israeli government has no intention of ever granting independence to the Palestinians (rightly or wrongly), Mexico’s position is not exactly welcome to pro-Israeli advocates. (This is merely an observation, not a critique.)

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for the recognition of the state of Palestine alongside Israel, reaffirming her country’s longstanding position on the matter.

In a statement on Saturday, reported by Revista Proceso, she declared, “We condemn the aggressions that are being experienced and also consider that the state of Palestine must be recognized in its entirety just like the State of Israel. This has been Mexico’s position for many years, and that is the position we have. We search for peace above all.”

Sheinbaum, known for her leftist political stance and European Jewish ancestry, has declared her atheism, as reported by Sky News Arabia. She has a history of criticizing Israeli actions in Gaza, including a public letter in January 2009 where she criticized a previous Israeli operation in the coastal enclave.

Pope Francis has called for an investigation to determine if Israel’s attacks in Gaza constitute genocide, according to excerpts released Sunday from an upcoming new book ahead of the pontiff’s jubilee year.

It’s the first time that Francis has openly urged an investigation of genocide allegations over Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. In September, he said Israel’s attacks in Gaza and Lebanon had been “immoral” and disproportionate, and that its military had gone beyond the rules of war.

The book, by Hernán Reyes Alcaide and based on interviews with the pope, is entitled “Hope Never Disappoints: Pilgrims Towards a Better World.” It will be released on Tuesday ahead of the pope’s 2025 jubilee, a yearlong celebration that’s expected to bring more than 30 million pilgrims to Rome.

Needless to say: pro-Jewish, pro-Israel advocates are furious, as seen from these other sources.
