Israeli Influence In Latin America

Israeli Influence In Latin America

Again, note that the video (above) is by Al Jazeera which is funded by the Qatari government, and can be biased.

The video is in Spanish, but it there is an option to have it translated to English.

Unlike the USA, where there are very influential organized pro-Israel advocates, in much of Latin America the Jewish influence can be muted. Hence there is a mixed response of Latin American countries to the Mideast situation.

So Israel has to use different methods – other than it would in the USA or Canada – to get its message across.

Argentina is sort of an exception, as the Jews in Argentina were, by percentages, much larger than in other Latin countries. And Argentina’s president Javier Milei is very pro-Israel.

The real game changer is the rise of strong Evangelical Christianity in Latin America, especially in Brazil, where the Evangelical Christians are close to one-third of the population. When the President was Bolsonaro, the policies of the government were quite pro-Israel. Now that Lula is president, the police of Lula’s anti-Israel stances have to be muted from what they would otherwise be. The Evangelicals in Brazil are a powerful voting bloc.

Again, Brazil is an exception. Under President Bolsonaro, Brazil’s foreign policy was very, very pro-Israel, but the last Brazilian presidential election returned Lula to office. (However, that election was suspicious). Even so, Lula cannot be quite as anti-Israel as he would like, because of the Evangelical votes.

So the best thing for Israel to do would be to support Evangelical Christianity.

Argentine President Javier Milei rejected the arrest order the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is being accused of committing crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Milei posted a statement on X on Thursday backing Netanyahu on behalf of Argentina. He said that the country deeply disagrees with the arrest order that also involves former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

“This decision disregards Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself from the constant attacks of terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah,” Milei wrote.

Argentina’s President Milei has declared his affinity for Israel, and also for the Jewish religion. So this is no surprise.

But it goes deeper than that, Argentina – unlike other Latin nations – has had a large Jewish population for over a century, and they have greatly affected Argentina’s politics and culture. There have been Jews on the Argentine Pampas to Jews in Argentine music, etc.

Milei has broken ranks with much of Latin America’s drift to the left by being a free market advocate and a friend of Israel – he even considered converting to Judaism.

Last year, Milei even went so far as to fly up to New York to consult with Hasidic rabbis.

President Milei takes this seriously.

To see the effect of Jews on Argentina:

Argentina has the seventh largest community of Jews in the world, and the largest in Latin America.

There were some rough times during the general’s dictatorship from (1976-1983), but that was due more to politics than religion.

Historically, Argentina has been one of the more friendly countries in the world to Jews. Herzl actually considered a province in Argentina as an option for a Jewish state, if the Jews could not get back the Holy Land.

Due to the influence of Arabs in Latin America, particularly Palestinian-Latins, there has been a diplomatic move away from Israel by some Latin countries.

Argentina has been the notable exception.

This does not mean that things have been perfect for Jews in Argentina. After the October 7 attack, antisemitism has gone up, even in Argentina.

But President Milei remains friendly to Israel and to Judaism.

Most Brazilians Support Israel

Most Brazilians Support Israel

I have known this for a long time.

About one-third of Brazil is what we Americans would call Evangelical Christians. And when Evangelicals reach such a demographic in society, they affect politics.

Brazil’s prior president, Bolsonaro, got baptized in the Jordan River by Evangelicals.

The last election which supposedly Lulu won was supect, but one thing is clear, Brazil is as much, if not more so, pro-Israel than America.

Over 80% of Brazilians take issue with Lula’s anti-Israel comment

[T]the Brazilian public is not following its leader [Lulu].

A CNN Brasil poll on Monday found that eight of 10 Brazilians – or 83% of those polled – took issue with Lula’s comparison. [Note: Lulu’s anti-Israel comment]

This dovetails with what one senior diplomatic official said in Jerusalem: “There is a gap in Brazil between the government and the public, with the public more supportive of Israel than the government, and this shows up in polls and in parliamentary debates.”

The CNN Brasil poll, for instance, found that 57% of the 800 respondents thought that Israel is on the right side in this conflict, while 28% sided with Hamas. Additionally, 26% said that Brazil should support Israel in this war, another 14% said the Palestinians, while 54% said the country should stay neutral – something Lula’s government is not doing. In the first two months after the war, support for Israel, as evident in various polls, was running at between 70% and 80%.

The power of Evangelicalism in Brazil is increasing.

Brazil is having an Evangelical explosion, and it is very pro-Zionist. You will not hear this on the regular media.

The President of Brazil, President Lula, has made some comments comparing the plight of Palestinians in Gaza to the Holocaust.

Well, the Israeli spin machine was furious.

Israel’s Netanyahu slams Brazilian president’s comparison of Gaza war to the Holocaust
February 18, 2024

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL (AP) — Israel on Sunday condemned Brazil’s president for comparing the war in Gaza to the Holocaust, accusing him of being antisemitic and trivializing the Nazi genocide of European Jews during World War II.

The outcry further strained relations between the countries, which have deteriorated since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva returned to office last year. Lula has portrayed himself as a leader of the “ Global South,” a loosely defined group of developing countries.

Of course, Israel goes into attack mode with any comparison of its operations in Gaza to what the Nazis did to the Jews in Europe in World War II.

But Colombia and Brazil are standing by Brazil.

Colombia, Bolivia back Brazil’s Lula in Israel row over Gaza war comments
21 Feb 2024

Colombia and Bolivia are backing Brazil as its diplomatic row with Israel escalated after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, comparing its actions with the Holocaust.

Well, Brazil was wrong, to be sure. But was it wise for Israel to make this a bigger issue than it should be?
