MOISÉS VILLE, Argentina — At its height in the 1940s, this outpost on Argentina’s grasslands had four synagogues for a population of 5,000, a theater for Yiddish-language acting troupes, a newspaper filled with feverish debates about the creation of the state of Israel and saloons where Jewish gauchos galloping in from the pampas could nurse a drink alongside fellow cowhands.

Now, Moisés Ville, founded in 1889 by Jews fleeing the pogroms of the Czarist Russian empire, has only about 200 Jews among its 2,000 residents. The last regularly functioning synagogue lacks a rabbi. The Hebrew school halted classes this year because of the dwindling number of Jewish children. Some of the last remaining Jewish gauchos have swapped their horses for Ford pickup trucks, and they now ponder the future of their way of life.

Group Studes Latin – Arab Relations

Group studies relations between Arabs and Latin America

São Paulo – Two years ago, a group of researchers from different countries decided to join forces to form a centre for studies to examine relations between the countries of the Middle East and North Africa and the nations in Latin America. Thus arose New Generation Consulting, a think tank based in Lebanon that is seeking closer ties with Brazilian organisations.

“There is a very strong and great potential among the regions of the Arab world and Latin America in terms of diaspora, culture and trade. There are strong complementarities, but no one really focused on how to build bridges between the two regions,” said the French-Chilean Janaina Herrera, managing director of the think tank. She and the Lebanese Issam Al Khatib, COO and technological consultant at the research centre, visited the headquarters of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce on Thursday (06) and were greeted by the organisation’s director-general, Michel Alaby.

The New Generation Consulting has ten professionals in different areas, Economics, Anthropology, Political Science and Diplomacy, among others. The centre also has a network of supporters including entrepreneurs who help the project.

A group of tourists visiting from the Dominican Republic got the shock of their lives Sunday when they bumped into two of Latin media’s most iconic faces while walking in the Ein Kerem village in Jerusalem. The tourists screamed in disbelief as famed Univision TV hosts, Don Francisco and Raul De Molina, posed for pictures with them.

Francisco also happens to be Jewish; he changed his name from the Jewish-sounding Mario Kreutzberger when he started doing stand-up comedy acts in Miami more than 50 years ago.
