Chile’s Senate Remembered Gazans?

Chile’s Senate Remembered Gazans?

Posted on YouTube: May 19, 2021

Can you image that in the U.S. Senate?

NO WAY!

The Palestinians in Chile have clout.

Senator Alejando Navarro, a leftist senator, started by mentioning how bad conditions in Gaza were. Then he noted that there was talk of a conquest of Gaza. Then the Senator put forth a request to remember the victims of both sides.

The president of the Senate approved the motion to remember the dead civilians and children of the Israel-Gaza war, but he kept the tone diplomatically neutral by re-stating that the moment of silence would be for the victims of all sides.

However, the Palestine Federation of Chile labelled their video on YouTube as if the Chilean Senate was honoring the Gazan victims – without mentioning that the moment of silence also remembered Israeli victims.

Make no mistake, the Palestine Federation of Chile is powerful in Chile. Even non-Arab-Chileans will yield to its influence.

One prominent Jewish Chilean has spoken in the past about the Palestinian-Chilean community’s power …

The Palestinian community is to Chile what the Jewish community is to the U.S.

– Gabriel Zaliasnek, then president of Chile’s Jewish Federation

Remember that Chile is not a third-world dictatorship, but a borderline first-world country with a functioning democracy. It is a trend setter in Latin America.

Such pro-Palestinian sympathies in a Western democracy is troubling.

Both the Israelis and Jewish groups have started to notice this.

The World Jewish Congress posted this on YouTube last year:

Yes, I know, I am posting this about 9 days late. The video of the protest was posted on Friday, a week and two days ago.

But better late than never.

Chile has a wealthy, very influential Palestinian community, and they are fervently against Israel, and they make themselves felt in Chilean politics.

Leftist-Argentines Protest 2021 Israel-Gaza War

Leftist-Argentines Protest 2021 Israel-Gaza War

Not Just Chilestinians, but many leftists in Argentina are protesting against Israeli actions during this Gaza War.

Points to remember:

1) Unlike Chile – or most of Latin America, for that matter – Argentina has had a large and influential Jewish community.

2) Most Arabs in Argentina are Syrian- or Lebanese-Christians. Palestinian Arabs among them are a minority. Most Arab-Argentines are Christian.

3) Argentina is on the other side of the world, so it is late autumn there.

4) Unlike Chile, Palestinians are not very influential in Chile. However, leftists are influential. Hence, they are protesting against Israel, but for different reasons that the Chilestinos. For the Chilestinos, it is a matter of heritage and family. Not so for most Argentines.

Chilestinian History of Palestine

Chilestinian History of Palestine

Palestinian Christians started arriving in Chile in the 19th Century. In 1938, they founded Club Palestino, with a charter from the British mandate. Today, Club Palestino is one of the more prestigious clubs in Chile.

They are called Chilestinos (almost all are Christian), and have risen to become elites in Chile. The equivalent term in English would be Chilestinians – which is a portmanteau of Chile and Palestine.

The Chilestinos take a pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionist view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This is a Chilestinian version of Palestinian history. Yes, it is in Spanish, but there is an option to auto-translate it to English.

The Palestinians in Chile are not a mere curiousity. Chile is a first world country, and the Palestinians are elites. They shape the foreign policy and course of Chile.

The version of history they present will not be agreeable to those who are friendly to Israel. Indeed, many pro-Israel and Jewish groups have expressed concern about the Palestinians in Chile.
