Chile May Have a President of Palestinian Origins

Daniel Jadue is a grandson of Palestinian immigrants to Chile and he is the expected forerunner to become Chile’s next president.

His leftist leanings are indeed troubling, but many of Chile’s Jewish community are also worried because he is considered, by them, to be antisemetic.

Wikipedia

Daniel Jadue was born in Recoleta, Santiago to small business owners Magaly del Carmen Jadue Jadue and Juan Fariz Jadue Jadue. He was estranged from his father, a supporter of Augusto Pinochet, for most of his life. Jadue is the grandson of Christian Palestinian immigrants who arrived in Chile during the first half of the last century.

An Israeli newspaper, Ha’aretz, has taken note:

Ha’aretz – June 23, 2021

A Grandson of Palestinian Immigrants Could Be Chile’s Next President, and These Jews Are Worried

Daniel Jadue, who has previously accused Jews of controlling the media and refers to the Jewish community as the ‘Zionist community,’ is close to assuming Chile’s highest office. Chilean Jews explain their concerns and why some are now making aliyah

He’s a communist of Palestinian origin known for his fierce animosity to Israel and open hostility to the Jewish community – and if the latest polls are correct, Daniel Jadue could become Chile’s next president.

Chile has a small Jewish community, and they are worried. Chilean Jews are vastly outnumbered by Palestinian-Chileans (Chilestinians/Chilestinos), which are more than a mere ethnic bloc, but a wealthy, powerful elite. The Palestinians in Chile are over-represented in offices of power and industry.

In many ways their success mirrors that of Jews in America.

The Palestinian community is to Chile what the Jewish community is to the U.S.

– Gabriel Zaliasnik, then president of Chile’s Jewish Federation

That one of the Palestinian community’s members – one who is considered anti-semetic by the Jews – is so close to the presidency scares them.

As Ha’aretz notes, many Jews are considering Aliyah.

If this sounds like much ado about nothing, it isn’t.

The Simon Wisenthal Center in 2020, listed Daniel Jadue’s candidacy for the presidency as one of year’s top 10 anti-semitic incidents.

This is worrisome.

NOTE: In the end, Daniel Jadue did not win. He lost to Gabriel Boric in the left wing primaries. Boric went on to win the general election. While not as bad as Jadue, Garbriel Boric is still not considered friendly to Israel.

Israel-Gaza War – 2021

israel-vs-palestinians

Update: May 21, 2021 – The Chilestinians and leftists have come out to protest against Israel. Particularly in Chile, the Chilestinians can affect the agenda of the country.

In South America, only Columbia and Brazil supported Israel.

But one has to remember that Brazil has a large Evangelical Christian Community. While Columbia’s Evangelicals are now only 13% of the population, they are growing rapidly in influence and numbers.

(Original report – May 13, 2021)

From what I see on the internet, most of the sources in South America are showing their usual concern, but not really taking sides. While South America is not usually as pro-Israel as the United States is, there is not a lot of criticism against Israel from official sources either … except Venezuela.

Even in Chile – where there is a powerful Palestinian community – the government is not openly hostile to Israel, though it allows private citizens, politicians, or networks to be critical of Israel. Yet, even in Chile, the war in the Mideast is not given the attention that it is here in the USA. If it is even front page news, it is in a bottom paragraph.

It is amazing how a Google search of news in Spanish can bring up American (CNN/Spanish), British (BBC/Spanish), German (Deutsche Welle/DW/Spanish), and Spanish (European) sources. So the Latins get a standard feed of news, just like Americans.

Yes, they have CNN in Chile: CNN – CHILE.

The video below is from El Tiempo (The Times) in Colombia. It seems to be somewhat neutral, just explaining the facts.

It has to be remembered, however, TeleSur (TV South), which is centered in Venezuela, is biased against Israel. Venezuela has Iranian connections.

Venezuela has had this anti-Israel bias since the time of Hugo Chavez.

This is interesting: A Israeli-Jewish woman from Uruguay is talking to Venezuelan news below:

This is from a state run TV station. VTV (Venezolana de Televisión).

STILL HOWEVER

The Palestinians in South America are furious.

Chilestinians (Palestinian-Chileans) have asked the Chilean government to sanction Chile.

Source: Palestine Federation (translation assisted by Google App)

In a public statement, the Chilean Palestinian Inter-Parliamentary Group condemned the attacks against the Palestinian population.

The Chilean-Palestinian Inter-Parliamentary Group called on the Government “to take immediate sanctioning measures in the face of violations of International Law by the Israeli Occupying Power and above all, in the face of the brutal violation of International Humanitarian Law.”

Below you can read the public statement:

Given the acts of violence that are taking place in Occupied Palestine, such as

Deputies of the Republic of Chile, we see ourselves in the need to declare the following:

1. We condemn and reject in the strongest possible way the unjustified and excessive use of force by the Israeli Government, its police and army, who have carried out an unnecessary and brutal bloodshed.

2. As the Chilean Palestinian Committee, we have denounced more than a dozen times the Apartheid and the Persecution of which the Palestinians are victims, the same that has endorsed Human Rights Watch in its most recent report on the Palestinian issue.

3. What is happening right now in the neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan, are a vivid sample that the Occupation has not ceased and very much … On the contrary, it continues to expand, violating the most minimal rights of the Palestinian People.

4. Faced with this devastating scenario, we find ourselves obliged to demand that the Government of Chile to take immediate sanctioning measures for violations of International Law by the Israeli Occupying Power and above all, in the face of the brutal violation of International Humanitarian Law. It is unpresentable that in full World Pandemic the occupying power not only refuse to vaccinate millions of Palestinians who according to the same Geneva Convention must be under their safeguard, but in this context they operate with total impunity to commit the two crimes against humanity denounced by Human Rights Watch.

5. As Parliamentarians and Parliamentarians we will not be passive accomplices of what happens in Palestine, that is why we speak out loudly to demand an end to impunity with which the Israeli Government has acted for many years.

I seriously doubt that the Chilean government will do anything.

There are Jews in South America, but they do not have the influence they have in America. However, Brazil is very Evangelical, and pro-Israel.

I believe this is from a Jewish News Agency who released a video with a Spanish title.

Pro-Palestinian groups condemn Israel for stopping ambulances to help Palestinian victims. But this video (above) is troubling. Palestinians actually attacked a Jewish (Mogen David) ambulance.

To see where public opinion is going, one has to go to Twitter or Facebook, and even there, there are sock puppets manipulating the public response.

Famous Argentine Journalist Talks to Chile’s Federación Palestina

Famous Argentine Journalist Talks to Chile’s Federación Palestina

Posted August 27, 2020

This is in Spanish, but it there is an option to have it translated to English.

This is very interesting. Pedro Brieger, a media force in Latin America – and who, himself, is Jewish – shows up on the YouTube Channel for the Palestine Federation of Chile, for a conversation.

Pedro Brieger is controversial. Many Jews consider him less than friendly to the Likud (right wing) strain of Zionism. That is for you to decide.

Brieger is an academic – He held (and may still hold) a chair in Sociology of the Middle East at the University of Buenos Aires – and also a journalist in Argentina, where he is a noted commentator, as well as an author who has written many books on the Mideast. While, he may not be that well known in America, he is famous among Latin, Jewish, and Arab circles – a major hitter in the formation of public opinion in the Latin World.

I translated (poorly) one of his commentaries which was broadcast on Argentina’s government affiliated Channel 7. If you want, you can click the auto-translate option to see how poorly I did.

Posted on YouTube around 8 years ago

I cannot over-emphasize Brieger’s influence. I have seen a right-wing Zionist websites tear Brieger down, and have communicated with left-wing Jews who love him.

The so-called “extremist” Masada2000 [a very right wing pro-Israeli site, which is now taken down] had listed Pedro Brieger as a self-hating Jew.

Again, that is for you to decide. You might start by reading some of his books, which are available on Amazon (Click Here), albeit in Spanish.

In 2006, Brieger claimed that the Israeli government tried to pressure the Argentine government (against) him and his broadcasting.

Hamas Thanked the Chilean Government

From a story from July 2020.
On an Evangelical Christian website chilecristiano (Christian Chile).

Source: http://chilecristiano.cl/

The “number two” of the Palestinian Islamic terrorist organization Hamas, Musa Abu Marzuq thanked Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru and El Salvador for calling their respective ambassadors in Israel to consult as a result of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

“I want to take this opportunity to address our gratitude to the peoples and governments of Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Peru and El Salvador,” said Abu Marzuk, in Cairo. These countries called their ambassadors for consultations in the last two weeks in protest against what they described as “indiscriminate bombings” and “non-respect for international humanitarian law,” according to the different governments. The deputy head of the Hamas Political Office expressed his “great appreciation to these countries for the solidarity shown with the Palestinian people.”

Regarding the position of the international community, the Hamas leader stressed that it has generally been favorable to the Palestinians, because the Israeli operations have been condemned. His criticism was directed against the United States, which he accused of having “always a partial position in favor of Israel. “” Our children and women are killed with American weapons, “he denounced.

Thanking only the government, the evangelical people support Israel

The Evangelical website has strongly distanced itself from the government position.

As Latin Arabia has noted before, the growing Evangelical Church in Latin America is very pro-Zionist. The Evangelicals have events like a NIGHT TO HONOR ISRAEL. The Evangelicals are often the only group standing against an anti-Israel view.

In Brazil, the present president, Bolsonaro, is married to an Evangelical, and he is very pro-Israel.

In Chile, right now, the Palestinian-Chilean community holds sway. In time, as Evangelicalism grows in Chile – and it is growing – the pro-Palestinian attitude of the government will change.
